Historic Building Open During Construction

Brooks Brothers' renovation delivers Back Bay shoppers a brand new retail experience. The existing building located on an important corner in the historic Back Bay area of Boston was in need of upgrades to all systems, including life safety, accessibility, mechanical and electrical components. These all had to be replaced, repaired or upgraded while the building remained open for customers and in conformance with the regulations and approvals of the City of Boston and the Back Bay Architectural Commission.

Coordinating mechanical, electrical, and fire protection systems with architectural program elements within old and historic buildings requires a particular skill set that is enhanced with the integration of disciplines within one office.

Integrated Design Group provided a phased approach to upgrade the existing infrastructure. In close coordination with the selling floor, construction work included a new sprinkler system, new mechanical units, and new electrical service. Special effort with the Back Bay Architectural Commission included building a cardboard mock-up of a new HVAC rooftop unit that would be visual from the street.
