Citizens Bank has expanded rapidly for over a decade through acquisition and internal growth, placing increased demands on systematic upgrades to its data center and infrastructure. A doubling of the raised floor area, with significant dedicated new infrastructure, was required without impacting ongoing operations. This situation is again faced in 2010, with another 5,500 SF for computer rack space at a much higher density required.

In both 2004 and 2010, proximity to the existing raised floor (making new and old contiguous) meant placing the ten and five thousand square foot additional data centers in the area near the site entry. It has required some careful planning and architectural design, to make these additional infrastructure spaces both invisible and secure to the public. Completely independent, fully redundant data infrastructures were designed adjacent to each addition to raised floor space – both with 2N infrastructure (1,200 kW UPS). Building these projects on a short construction schedule, and directly next to the continuously operating existing data center, meant careful coordination of architects and engineers.
