Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) currently operates many data center sites on campus. The two largest were in need of mechanical, electrical, and architectural upgrades and expansions. Over a period of three years, some of the most critical of these have been completed to support the need for crucial data center infrastructure designed to match and safeguard the University's cutting edge research. This kind of technological support is key to maintaining MIT's pioneering spirit and innovations in materials and products. Given the critical nature of the research and teaching that
occurs around the clock in at the University's laboratory buildings and data centers, intricate planning, design, and
phasing was critical to prevent any downtime.
Integrated Design Group partnered with MIT’s Department of Information Systems and Technology and the Department of Facilities to create expanded and more robust data centers in two key locations on campus. Among the upgrades were electrical distribution and K-rated transformer, mechanical improvements, overhead cabling, and fire protection systems that incorporate redundancy to prevent accidental downtime, ease of maintenance, and provide growth into the future. In addition, building improvements which include enclosing windows and code updates were completed while the facility remained operational. Additional work planned is an expansion to one of the buildings to further increase power, cooling and racks, and an effort to plan a new facility to be located off campus.
