Building Discretely: Hiding A New Data Center at Public Park

The MathWorks | Disaster Recovery Data Center | Natick, MA

The software development company, The MathWorks, was expanding their corporate campus with major renovations to several existing and adding a new building that houses a campus chilled water plant. Integrated Design Group was engaged to design a new disaster recovery data center approximate to the main visitor entrance. The design focused on energy efficiency and its visual interest due to its prominent location. Electrical system design uses the existing 800kW generator with 200kW UPS and distribution system in 2N configuration distribution. In response to the company’s energy savings agenda, passive rear door heat exchangers were employed on all IT cabinets and use the 60° F water from the central plant. Floor to ceiling glass provides views into the computer room to showcase the company’s technology. ID incorporated a theatrical lighting system in the computer room to allow The MathWorks to stage different lighting conditions during customer tours.
