To maintain the institution’s status as a leader in research, critical work has been completed to match and safeguard MIT’s cutting edge research through critical infrastructure upgrades. Given the critical nature of the research and teaching that occurs around the clock in MIT’s laboratory buildings and data centers, intricate planning, design, and phasing was critical to prevent any downtime. Integrated Design Group collaborated with MIT’s Department of Information Systems and Technology and the Department of Facilities to create expanded and more robust data centers. Among the upgrades were electrical distribution and K-rated transformer, mechanical improvements, overhead cabling, and fire protection systems that incorporate redundancy to prevent accidental downtime, ease of maintenance, and provide growth into the future. In addition, building improvements which include enclosing windows and code updates were completed while the facility remained operational
